Tamworth teen the dominator

TAMWORTH young gun Tori Saunders showed her immense talent with a dominant performance in the weekend’s Heinrich Haussler Racing Kangaroos Junior Two-Day Tour.

Saunders won all four stages to take out the U15 women’s division.

But she was just one of many local riders to do well.

Her sister Jessie won her under 13 girls’ section after success in the last two stages on Sunday.

She was second in the time trial and road race on Saturday but wins in the second road race and criterium on Sunday gave her the title.

The third of the Saunders girls, Olivia, picked up two seconds, a third and a fourth in the 9yrs girls to finish second overall.

Inverell’s Ben Fox claimed the king of the mountain jersey and finished second behind Sydney’s Jack McCulloch in the U19 boys.

“He rode really well,” Racing Kangaroos director Kurt Polock said.

Fox was the biggest threat to McCulloch and won both road stages.

The first took riders along Fossickers Way towards Bingara and up Mt Keera and Sunday’s third stage from Inverell towards Ashford.

“He’s a talented climber,” Polock said.

Armidale’s Sam Jenner also finished on the podium in the 15s boys and was impressive.

He won the opening stage time trial and Sunday’s road race and criterium but had a bit of a hiccup in the first road stage, falling and losing 10-12 seconds.

While he got back on his bike and finished third, Wagga rider Cameron Scott’s combined results saw him take top spot.

Armidale clubmate Freya Weston also had a good weekend, finishing second to Tori Saunders in the 15s.

Tamworth’s Sara Spokes was another to place.

She was third in the 17s women behind Lara Batkin and Emma Appoloney after a gutsy win in Sunday’s road race, having to break away twice, which she followed up with a second in the criterium.

Tamworth’s Lewis Chapman was in the top eight in most of the races in the U17 men, won by Mudgee’s Ayden Toovey.

The locals will now have a weekend off before the state road championships at

Armidale.
