Bronzes for Tamworth pair at national titles05 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
TAMWORTH cyclists Tori Saunders and Kierin Lewis have finished among the medals at the Australian championships in Shepparton, Victoria, in a strong result for their local club.
Saunders took home two bronze medals – in the 15s women’s road race and criterium events – and Lewis a bronze in the 17 men’s road race, but other local riders also did well. Sara Spokes finished seventh in the 17s women’s road race, and 13th in the time trial. Spokes also led the criterium with 300m to ride but was pushed out wide onto the gravel on the second last corner. Lewis finished eighth in the time trial, while Saunders came sixth in the road race. Tamworth coach Alan Spokes said Lewis’s ride in the road race was particularly strong. “There were three or four breakaways in that race and he was in every one of them,” Spokes said. “He rode to be a winner, and came away a winner.” Another local, Lewis Chapman, made the final of the 17s men’s criterium. “He’s only been riding about 14 months,” Spokes said.
