Juniors
1st: Sam Jenner (Armidale)
2nd: Emily Nicholls
3rd: Lewis Chapman
The juniors was a great race over 15 minutes plus 1 lap. The speed was fast the whole race and came down to a bunch sprint with Sam Jenner from Armidale proving too fast for Emily and new recruit Lewis.
C Grade
1st: David Jenner (Armidale)
2nd: Alex Nicholls
3rd: D Bourke, sorry mate dont know his first name (Armidale)
This race had everything from attacks to crashes. There seemed to always be someone off the front making the group chase. Al Nicholls took the bottom corner a bit hot and had a nasty crash and we hope he has a speedy recovery. Dave Jenner won in a bunch sprint from the late falshing Alex Nicholls and D Bourke( Armidale)
B Grade
1st: Micheal Swain
2nd: Graeme Lewis
3rd: Rick Maher
This race was also very fast with a lot of early attacks from Micheal Swain. They were all quickly countered by the bunch. The race settled down through the middle stages until woth 5 minutes to go the club Strongman Graeme Lewis put in a strong attack to lead on his own. The group were madly chasing until with 1 corner to go Micheal Swain burst out from the group, across the 20m gap that was left and went past Graeme with around 50 metres to go. It was great to see an attack from Lewy and it so nearly payed off but Micheal just timed his run to perfection. Rick Maher led the rest of the chase bunch home closely behind for third place.
A Grade
1st: Toby Maher
2nd: Sam Spokes
3rd: Wayne Toomey
Our race was the hardest crit of this sesaon by a long way. we averaged the fastest all season of 41 km/h. Sam threw everything at us attacking multiple times nearly every lap. He proved how strong he is ahead of his upcoming national selection race. However on the day it wasn't enough to shake the rest of the group with everyone rallying together and chasing Sam back every attack. Wayne Toomey and Kierin Lewis in particular did some really strong turns to keep the race together. The last few laps the attacks kept coming but it wasn't enough to keep the newly back on the bike Toby Maher from winning the race in spectacular style with a big head to head sprint with Sam down the finishing straight. Sam lead around the last corner which is usually the best tactic but Toby proved just how good a sprinter he is by edging Sam out in the final metres. Glad to have him back on the bike.

C&D Grade
1st: Mal Nash
2nd: Alex Nicholls
3rd: Sara Spokes
A&B Grade
1st: Kierin Lewis
2nd: Peter Schulz
3rd: Al Spokes
C&D Grade was another fast race with Sara and Alex in an early breakaway in the windy conditions making the chasing bunch work hard to bridge the gap. Mal Nash did his best Mohammed Ali impression with "rope a dope" tactics as he rode 30 metres off the back of the peleton all race, making them think he was suffering, to bomb the entire field on the final laps to take an easy victory. A nailbiting sprint between Alex and Sara had the starters looking at each other to determine who crossed the line first but it was decided alex had just snuck past in the dying metres.
A&B grade saw Peter Schulz attack from the gun making everyone suffer to bring him back. Mitch Carrington then tried to do the same but all he achieved was blowing himself up and getting droppped almost as soon as the peleton caught him. It turned into a war of attrition as the boys all pulled out one by one in the tough windy conditions. In the end it was only Kierin , Peter and Al left in the front group to fight out for the win. Kierin led out the sprint and was too fast for Peter and Al with enough time to give a salute to the heavens as he crossed the line for his first A grade win, while Peter and Al rolled in for second and third.
Cheers guys talk to ya next week.

Star teen notches weekend double
07 Feb, 2010 08:49 PM
SAM SPOKES continued his preparation for Australian junior selection trials by winning Saturday’s high-class Racing Kangaroos Criterium in Inverell.
The 17-year-old Tamworth cycling star beat former Australian road racing champion Peter McDonald to add further gloss to the win in a race run as a lead-in to Saturday night’s launch of the Inverell-based Racing Kangaroos junior cycling team.
Spokes, a member of the Port Macquarie-based Real Aussies Kids, was delighted with Saturday’s win in the Sapphire City.
Yesterday morning he followed it up by winning his Tamworth A and B Grade criterium at Goddard’s Lane from Peter Schultz and Kierin Lewis.
“Winning at Inverell was pretty good – it was a tough race,” Spokes said after yesterday’s Tamworth success.
“There were plenty of attacks.”
The teenager had planned to attack as much as possible and hope McDonald, who has moved to Armidale, would join him.
However it didn’t quite go as he had hoped, with Geoff Straub “and a Coffs rider” starting a breakaway 15 minutes from the finish.
He joined in and then a lap later McDonald and young Inverell rider, Ethan Kimmence, tacked on.
The race intensified in the back straight when, with about 600m to go, Straub attacked with Spokes on his wheel.
Spokes was able to pass Straub but McDonald re-emerged and the two duelled it out.
“I was lucky – I kicked again and just got him on the line,” Spokes said.
“I was pretty happy with that.
“It’s good that Peter McDonald has moved to Armidale.
“Hopefully I’ll get to race him a bit more.”
Spokes was also happy to be back racing his Tamworth clubmates yesterday morning as he prepares to head to Toowoomba this weekend for a weekend of racing.
“I’ve been invited up there with Ethan (Kimmence).
“Then from there I’ve got the Australian team selections
trials.
“They start in Tasmania on March 28 and then go to Murwillumbah on May 1.”
Also C&D had a good race with some great support to the younger riders from Darren Trail who led Alex Nichols through for the win over Peter Nash.

A milder morning for race goers, with a few heavy heads around from the Country music revelry the race got started with some keen juniors. Tori and Matt pushed each other till the end to have young Matt taking the sprint at the end and congratulating Tori on a good race. C & D had a gentlemens race with a nice pace kept till the end to see the Colonel (Dave Menzies) take out the bunch sprint for the win with Ian Woodhouse in 2nd and 3rd to Pete Nash. A & B where on from the start with Toby and Mitch attacking early and Sam covering. A few tricks where witnessed with Charles (Chucky) trying to grind off a peddle then sideways on the bike in the turn and Schulzy sliding his bike around the corner on the second last lap with a flat tyre. Toby then put in a big attack with Sam on his tail finishing with Sam first and Toby close in second and John Saunders 3rd.

Smokey day on the bike with a few away racing Cronulla Criterium's, Canberra Triathlons and the local Tri was running as well. We ran 2 Races with C & D going off together with D having a lap advantage with the pack having to stay together for the first half of the race. the pace began on the second half and Brian Geffries got up to win his first race back after 6 years and the Nash brothers coming in second and 3rd. A & B did a similar thing with the bunch being kept together for the first 15 minutes. With the pace on and Wayne Toomey putting in some big turns in the second half the bunch soon split with Wayne and Mitch finally pulling back B graders 1 lap advantage. To finally have John "Moeless" Brown sprint to get up to second. He surprised Mitch Carrington who got in 3rd behind Wayne who was too strong and won the sprint. The juniors didn't get a run but young Matt Carrington rode well to stay in touch with the C & D graders, I think he rolled in 4th so a great effort considering the distance he had to cover.

An interesting day of racing with A & B going off with a 2 lap handicap for the A graders. We knew it was going to be fun when the B graders put in a big start from 100m back and caught A grade. They threw everything they had at them and got rid of a few but young Kieren wasn't being dropped and showed some real guts covering all the attacks. he also won the race with his 2 lap advantage in-tacked, Mark Jarvis second with 1 Lap and Graham Lewis 3rd dragging his flat tyre across the line. C & D had a similar start with Lissie Nicholes starting with the bunch. She stayed with them to finally claim a win. Big Darren and Allen Nichols got away and worked well together with Darren eventually out sprinting Allen to the line to claim second place and Al 3rd. The juniors had a good race with a 10 minutes plus 1 lap with Emily a Matt working together to keep Greg Prowse away. Matt out sprinted Emily to take the with with emily 2nd and Greg 3rd.

A good turn out this morning with good numbers concidering the challenging wind, in juniors race and some people from Gunnedah, Quirindi & Manilla coming to have a race. Juniors kicked things off with a 5 lapper and Tori Saunders set the pace but Mat Carrington with his best Cavandish impersonation out sprinted them all at the end with Tori 2nd and Shaun Barnes 3rd. B Grade was up next, 25 Minutes plus 2 laps with a healthy race and a different person on the front every lap. The experienced riders kept up the pace but with Toby Maher saving himself for the big move and winning the sprint over a surprised Ty Tucker and a consistent all race John "Mowey" Brown 3rd. C Grade had a large field of riders and the pace was on with Kieren Lewis bringing up everyone's heart rate but Dave "Van Park" Menzies had too much for them at the end to out sprint the widely spread bunch with Claire Sheridan 2nd and Alex Nichols 3rd. A grade was a little slower with some tactics being played out and without Sam to keep us honest. John Saunders was away for a 5 laps early in the race but it was a little attack from the silver fox Alan Spokes that closed the deal with Mitch Carrington not missing the opportunity to close the gap and working with al to the finish, the rest of them couldn't pull them back. Mitch being too strong won the race with Alan second and Wayne Toomey 3rd with some coffee money. See you next week.
Results 22nd of November
A hot and windy Sunday morning gave way to some tough racing. Div 1 went off first with the boys going through there paces until a bored Ben Clark staged an attack. then the bunch split with 4 away and 3 chasers. The chasers caught the bunch close to the end but had nothing to challenge a strong Sam Spokes who won the event and Ben Clark second with Wayne Toomey 3rd. Div 2 had a fun race with Mark Jarvis and Ty Tucker keeping the bunch together and supporting the younger riders. Young Michael Swain showed his strength in the sprint over Dave Menzies with a good race from the old fella and Sara Spokes peddled her way into 3rd.

As I was licking my wounds on the side lines I only saw Wayne Toomey get up in div 1 and no idea about div 2, so if any one has the information I need feel free to send it through mail results@tamworthcycleclub.org.au.

Once again some tough racing. The Kids had a small turn out but the young fellows where enthusiastic and rode hard till the end. Greg Prowse ended up winning from Sam Ellicot. Div 2 had a fast race 25min + 2 with attacks by the older fellows keeping them honest. Darren Trail made an early break and had a group of 3 which ended up getting caught then to attack again in the last lap to get beaten at the line by Sean Leary, 3rd with a good solid performance was Ian Woodhouse. Div 1 was split into A & B with B grade getting a 3/4 lap head start. They tore themselves to bits trying to stay away from the A graders who kept a nice roll over until everyone was caught. This followed with some attacks from Sam, All, Mitch and Toomes. An attack at the 3 to go had set the finish with Peter schulz being dropped and a fast finish with Sam finally taking the race with Wayne Toomey second and John Saunders 3rd in his first Crit for the season.

No Clarky to defend his title today but a couple of hard fought races. Division 2's Michael Swain once again showed his dominance in the 25 minute and 2 lap race where he lead the last lap and made some distance on the bunch, chased by Darren Trail who placed second with Sean Leary 3rd, welcome to Div 1 Michael. Division 1 also had a fast race Sam had attacked early and was left hanging for most of the race when he was caught in the last 5 minutes, a bunch of attacks from Mitch Carrington and Wayne Toomey got the race underway with Sam holding off the onslaught to take the win from Mitch in close pursuit. The juniors had a race as well with a 5 lapper with young Matt Carrington winning the race from Grant Prowse, next week should see some more juniors riding with kids returning from their state events.
